MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, banned from schools?

Wednesday, August 02, 2006

The U.S House passed a bill that would ban "social networking sites" from schools and libraries. Does our government really have no faith in people to think for themselves or is it that the majority of the population can't think for themselves? They say these sites are havens for predators and that this will help keep predators from children. This is nuts. Why don't we just ban email or instand messaging for anyone under 18? How about we ban them from any thoughts not approved by an adult? How bout we ban them from talking to anyone who doesn't have papers proving they passed a background check?

How many people are there that use these sites? And how many predator cases have come up from one of these sites? My guess is that running the numbers will show that these sites aren't nearly the haven for predators that these watchdog groups would have you believe.

The fact is that if kids would use common sense they wouldn't run into problems with these sites. Maybe banning these sites is aimed to cover for all the bad parents who don't teach their children common sense.
