Sorry high schoolers, you are stuck with MAP tests

Thursday, July 27, 2006

The Missouri State Board of Education is on a roll. First, they lower expectations to try and get around the No Child Left Behind Act(scroll down to a previous post), now they have killed a plan to require high schoolers to take the ACT instead of the pointless MAP tests.

I'm trying to wrap my head around this one. A state high school task force recommended the change, and 70% of high schoolers take the test anyways. This would take the money that the state is using for the worthless MAP test and put it to good use, saving some cash strapped familes the $35 it takes to take the ACT once. Say for instance, Suzy has cash strapped parents and can't afford the $35 herself to take the ACT. Well if we had common sense folks in power here, maybe Suzy would get that ACT paid for, find out she's a genius and get scholarships to go to school.

Officials say they are worried about going to a nationwide test because it doesn't really fit in with the state curriculum and teacher training. Oh, I almost get it now. They are worried that taking a nationwide test will show everyone how our state curriculum doesn't match up to the rest of the country and will show teachers that all the training they are getting from the state is pretty much worthless. Another news flash, in the real world, you are competing with people from all over, not just people who benefited from the almighty missouri high school education.

If the BOE had passed this plan this year, it wouldn't have gone into effect until spring '08. So, even if they pass it next year, high schoolers wont benefit from it until spring '09.

Another shining example of the inmates running the asylum.
